Are you interested in tracing the history of your family, your house or your community? If the answer is yes, the Glamorgan Record Office can help you.

The Glamorgan Record Office holds many documents that can help you to find out more about the people and places in your community.

We hold many basic history sources that will help to get you off to a good start in your research. We also have more specialised records such as police and workhouse records.

We are based in the Glamorgan Building in Cardiffs civic centre. Details of how to find us, our opening hours and what to bring on your first visit are available on our website www.glamro.gov.uk where you will also find more about the information we hold on topics which might interest you.  If you cannot come in we do offer a research service for a fee.

The records we hold include:

The General Register Office index to Births, Deaths and Marriages from 1837 to 2001. The census returns for the whole of Glamorgan, and most of Monmouthshire from 1841 to 1901. The International Genealogical Index as well as the indexes to Probate Copies of Wills and Administrations from 1858 to 1955.

We have Parish Registers for all the ancient parishes in Glamorgan. We also have records of many non-conformist causes, including the Society of Friends.

Records of all levels of administration are held here from the Glamorgan Quarter Sessions to Community Councils, as well as all the services they provided; schools, building regulation plans, workhouses and childrens’ homes, electoral registers from 1840 to date.

We have police, hospital, shipping and maritime records, and many collections relating to the coal industry and other business and commercial activities in the area.

Families, estates and many individuals have placed their records in our care for people to use. Many of these collections include photographs and other images. We hold maps for the Rhondda Cynon Taf area and for the whole of Glamorgan from the 1700’s up to the 20th century.

Although we always try to accommodate visitors, space can be limited. It is always best to book a space and tell us what you are interested in before visiting as we need advance warning to produce some records.

A small charge is made for the use of microfilm or microfiche readers.

You can also search for records on Archives Network Wales www.archivesnetworkwales.info
